Durante los últimos años se están experimentando en el mundo cifras históricas en lo que respecta al consumo de drogas. A día de hoy Colombia está produciendo y cultivando más coca que nunca en su historia, la cifra ha llegado a duplicarse con respecto a años anteriores. Por su parte, México se mantiene como el mayor productor de heroína de América Latina y el tercero del mundo. El presente trabajo realiza una comparación del Plan Colombia y la Iniciativa Mérida, como dos planes sin precedentes en la lucha contra la droga, tanto por su alcance, como por la cuantía económica que recibieron o reciben todavía a día de hoy por parte de EEUU. Los resultados muestran que no se puede hablar de éxito, pero tampoco de rotundo fracaso. Aunque ambos planes han fracasado en su principal finalidad, sí que se han logrado avances en otros ámbitos también incluidos en el núcleo de sus objetivos.
Over the past few years, record-breaking marks on drug use have been registered in the world. Today Colombia is growing and producing more coca than ever in its history, the figure has doubled as compared to previous years. With respect to Mexico, it continues to be the biggest heroin producer in Latin America and the third one in the world. This work makes a comparison of the Plan Colombia and the Mérida Initiative, as two unprecedented plans in the fight against drugs, both because of their scope and because of the amount of money that they received or still receive from the US today. The results show that they are not regarded a success, but neither a complete failure. Although both plans have failed as for their main purpose, progress has been made in other areas also included in the core of their objectives.
